Jalayer named coaches of the year

The Orange Empire Conference today honored six Riverside soccer players as the women's all-conference team was released.

Also honored was head coach Lynsey Jalayer who was named coach of the year after leading the Tigers to a 10-4-2 conference mark (13-5-3 overall). Riverside had its strongest showing in years, finishing third in the conference race, three games out of first place.

Three of the six players honored were selected to the first team. Leading the list was freshman Alyssa Popov (Centennial HS). Popov led the conference in goals (16) and points (35). Joining her on the first team were Alana Wohlers (Notre Dane) and freshman goalie Christina Beckerle (Poly). Wohlers finished her freshman year fifth among conference members in points scored. TIGERS DROP FIRST MATCH AT STATE FINALS

WATER POLO WOMEN (11/20/2008)

Riverside women's water polo team had its 28-match win streak snapped as well as its hopes of winning its second-consecutive state championship as Cerritos, the south's No. 3 seed shocked the Tigers 12-11 in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Championships in Merced.

Riverside continues pool play today (Friday, Nov. 21) with a 1:30 p.m. match against American River, the north's No. 2 seed.

In the loss to Cerritos, Riverside blew a 10-8 third-quarter lead. The Tigers managed just one fourth-quarter goal, while the Falcons rolled off four final goals against Jayme Pekarske. Riverside actually blew leads of 6-2, 9-7 and 10-8.

Kendra Mueller paced Riverside's offense with three goals.


RIVERSIDE ROLLS PAST WEST LOS ANGELES

BASKETBALL MEN (11/19/2008)

Riverside opened play in the Fullerton Classic with a 87-48 rout of West Los Angeles. The Tigers, who will have Thursday off before resuming the tournament on Friday, got 20 points from Robbie Robinson and 13 from Charles Garcia.

Riverside will face Fullerton in one of the semifinals games on Fridat at 8 p.m. The Hornets rolled to a 82-64 victory over Victor Valley.

The Tigers improved to 6-1 with the win over West Los Angeles. Riverside settled the game early jumping out to a 45-22 halftime lead. The Oilers (3-2) were held to 30 percent shooting from the floor for the game and 14 percent from beyond the three-point line. LOMONICA, CALHOUN NAMED SCFA CENTRAL POW

FOOTBALL MEN (11/18/2008)

Freshman quarterback Nathan Lomonica (Murrieta Valley) and freshman defensive back/returner James Calhoun (North) have been selected the Southern California Football Association Central Conference Players of the Week.

Lomonica, a back-up quarterback who had been playing wide out while Coy Glass concludes his two-year career, stepped in for a injured Glass against Citrus and threw for 204 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lomonica was 12 of 20 in the Tigers' win.

Meanwhile, Calhoun did everything, but work the snack bar with the softball team. Calhoun started the game at quarterback, then moved to running back and eventually found himself at his defensive corner position. Calhoun, who will join the Tigers' basketball team this week, finished his final game of the 2008 season with 66 yar....More

THREE NAMED TO THE ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

FOOTBALL MEN (11/18/2008)

Riverside had three players named to the Southern California Football Association Central Conference Team it was announced today by the conference.

Leading the list was freshman James Calhoun (North HS). Calhoun was selected to the team as a first-team all-purpose player after playing quarterback, running back, defensive pack and punt returner. He was also named to the second-team as a defensive back.

Two other players earned second team honors-inside linebacker Trevor Lopez (Poly) and offensive lineman TJ Tuigamala (Paloma Valley). Lopez, a freshman, concluded the season with 56 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. He also broke up two passes.

STRONG FIELD SET FOR WELLS FARGO TOURNAMENT

BASKETBALL MEN (9/22/2008)

Riverside men's basketball coach John Smith today announced the playing field for the 39th Annual Wells Fargo Holiday Tournament, which is scheduled for Dec. 9-14. The annual 16-team tournament-the largest men’s tournament in the state and one of two largest in the country-will be highlighted by Citrus, the 2007-08 defending state champions.

"I can’t think of another year when we’ve been able to secure such a strong field," said Smith. "Even when I was coaching at San Bernardino, I can’t think of one better that this year’s tournament field."

In fact the finals of the tournament could be a rematch of the state championship game, since Fullerton is also in the field. Of the 16-teams in the tournament, seven of the teams were conference champions last year or co-champions. Yuba....More
